New Report and Webcast Address Recent Chemical Price Increases and
Shortages
Chemicals play an important role for utilities that provide clean
water to protect public health and the environment. In recent
years, there have been large price increases, as well as shortages in
the chemical supply chain, with significant implications for regulatory
compliance, public and environmental health, security, and long-term
utility sustainability.
A new research report, funded in part by WERF, could help utilities
develop strategies to address the issue of treatment chemical
supply. It describes the nature and importance of this emerging
issue in the United States and United Kingdom and identifies important
stakeholders and potential sources of information that can help inform
and clarify the issue. Moreover, the report develops recommendations for
next steps towards resolving or effectively managing spikes in cost and
supply shortages.
Several water and wastewater research partners—WERF, Water
Research Foundation (formerly AwwaRF), AWWA, and the United Kingdom
Water Industry Research—funded the project. The Water Research
Foundation has posted the report, Supply
of Critical Drinking Water and Wastewater Treatment Chemicals - A White
Paper for Understanding Recent Chemical Price Increases and
Shortages (report number 4225) online.
The Water Research Foundation will also host
the webcast Water and Wastewater Treatment
Chemicals: Shortages and Skyrocketing Prices on Wednesday, April
15. The project’s principal investigator, Jim Henderson of
Stratus Consulting, will present what we know about the issues and the
driving forces behind recent price and chemical availability
concerns. Please contact the Water Research
Foundation for more details.
