New Research to Investigate Trace Organics in BiosolidsWERF is expanding its research program on trace organics in biosolids this year. The organization is accelerating research efforts following the release of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Targeted National Sewage Sludge Survey, which indicates that a number of pharmaceuticals, steroids, and flame retardants are found in a high percentage of biosolids. WERF research will help to expeditiously determine whether the presence of these compounds in biosolids presents a problem. Several WERF subscribers are interested in forming a targeted collaborative research initiative to answer questions about the occurrence, fate, transport, and potential exposure to trace organics in biosolids. To facilitate subscriber discussions about useful research, WERF is considering several options, including meeting with interested subscribers at the upcoming WEF Biosolids Conference in Portland, OR and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies' (NACWA) upcoming meeting in Washington, D.C. Both meetings are during the first week of May. WERF is also working with the Chicago Metropolitan Water Reclamation District about a possible meeting in late March or April. For additional information, please contact Alan Hais, WERF’s program director for solids and residuals, at 703-684-2470 x7146 or ahais@werf.org. March 9, 2009 |
