Knowledge Area: Stormwater

Our Objective

WERF will evaluate how stormwater best management practices (BMPs) can affect water quality in streams, rivers, lakes, estuaries and other water bodies. We will provide simple spreadsheet screening tools as well as more comprehensive model-based products that stormwater managers, consultants, and others can use to make decisions on selection and design of effective BMP systems that achieve measurable improvements in water quality.

Report Helps Communities Overcome the Challenges of Water Management
A co-operative research effort between WERF and the Electric Power Research Institute developed a framework that will help communities smooth out the challenges they face on the road to water sustainability.
Use Rainwater to Grow Livable Communities
WERF recently unveiled an updated website which provides creative new ideas on sustainable stormwater practices.
Dogs on the Scent: Using Canine-Scent Tracking to Locate Sources of Storm Drain Contamination
The use of dogs in locating human sewage in storm drains is being tested in this new study funded under WERF's unsolicited research program.

BMP and LID Whole Life Cost Tools
In partnership with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), WERF has developed a new suite of tools to address the costs associated with vegetative roofs, rainwater catchment systems, and bioretention facilities.
Decentralized Stormwater Controls for Urban Retrofit and CSO Reduction (Phase 2)
Learn more about the planning necessary to integrate decentralized stormwater controls for combined sewer overflow management.
Stormwater Best Management Practices (BMPs) Studies
Explore more than 340 stormwater best management practices (BMPs) studies in WERF's International Stormwater BMP Database. New findings from this project help answer the question, "how well do BMPs perform in removing bacteria?" An article in Stormwater magazine (May 2008) describes the findings.
Development of a Protocol for Risk Assessment of Microorganisms in Separate Stormwater Systems
Download an executive summary or order this full report about indicator organisms in stormwater, including concentrations and environmental fate and their relationship with pathogens.
Bioassessment: A Tool for Managing Urban Aquatic Life Uses for Urban Streams
Order this tool offering a research digest, flow-time series estimator model, and literature database. Or, view an executive summary.
