WEF, NOWRA Partnership to Support Integrated Water Resource Management

The Water Environment Federation (WEF) and the National Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association (NOWRA) announced a significant new partnership to support integrated water resource management. The partnership took effect Feb. 1, 2010. NOWRA staff and offices will relocate to WEF’s headquarters in Alexandria, VA.

The two organizations are partnering on:

• training
• promoting new technologies and applications for onsite and natural treatment systems
• educating the public on proper use and benefits of decentralized systems
• promoting consistent regulation for effective management and oversight

According to a joint press release, one-quarter of the U.S. population and one-third of all new residential and commercial development use decentralized systems for wastewater treatment.

Although the water and wastewater sector is heavily segmented, there is a growing consensus within the sector that water and wastewater management strategies must be integrated and various approaches considered in order to meet the evolving needs of the public and address emerging environmental challenges, according to the release.

WEF and NOWRA are also partners with WERF on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Decentralized memorandum of understanding.  For more information on the partnership, please contact WERF Senior Program Director Jeff Moeller.
