Our Objective

Support the transition from a treatment-based industry to a resource recovery and reclamation industry that is both economically and environmentally sustainable. Although nutrients will be our first target, eventually all materials in wastewater that can be commoditized will be. The result will be far less release of residuals to the environment. The third round of the Reinvent the Toilet Challenge is designed to prototype a means of dealing effectively and cost-efficiently with human waste for the 2.5 billion people on earth who currently lack access to safe and affordable sanitation.
WERF Recognizes San Antonio Water System for Achieving a Clean Water Trifecta
WERF recognized San Antonio Water System with its Award for Excellence in Innovation for achieving its goal to recycle and use all treatment process residuals. San Antonio’s motivation to achieve that goal grew from their conviction that wastewater treatment process residuals are valuable resources to be beneficially used, not waste products for disposal.
