Intensification of Resource Recovery Forum Overview

Technology Pitches and Teamwork Standout at Intensification of Resource Recovery Forum

WERF and WEF hosted the Intensification of Resource Recovery (IR^2) Forum on August 9th -11th at Manhattan College in New York. The Forum was held in cooperation with Manhattan College, BlueTech Research, and with support from the National Science Foundation. Over 30 new technologies showcased their innovations for roughly 150 leading experts and practitioners from utilities, consulting firms, universities, and other key representatives in the industry. Experts provided overviews on the state of the knowledge of specific technology areas which set the stage for group working sessions following the presentations. In addition to exposure the technologies received at the Forum, they also competed for two awards by BlueTech Research entitled BlueTech Disrupt-o-Meter and Blue Truffle. Paul O’Callaghan, CEO of BlueTech Research, presented the awards at the end of the event to the selected winners: Andreas Giesen of Nereda and Paul Christy of Cambi, Inc

Group Technology Working Sessions were also a key feature at the IR^2 Forum. During these sessions, participants broke into five small groups based on interest: overcoming dewaterability impacts, biosolids to energy, intensified mainstream BNR processes, carbon diversion, and digestion enhancements. The sessions brought together technology providers with university, consulting, and utility representatives for productive discussions on how to advance the technologies. Each group addressed four points in relation to their topic:

  • What are the research needs and gaps?
  • What are the technology pilot and demonstration needs?
  • What else is needed to advance this technology topic?
  • Who are the potential partners?

The results from the group working sessions will be incorporated into a new WERF report. The program agenda, participants list, presentations, breakout notes, and other meeting materials are provided below. In addition, the results from the group working sessions will be incorporated into a new WERF report on Intensification of Resource Recovery.
