What technologies are you interested in investigating?
Unitywater is very focused on resource recovery initiatives and technologies. Our business development and innovation section provides a platform for idea generation and evaluation for new processes, technologies, and systems under our four main strategic priorities: Develop Our People, Pursue Efficiency, Enhance Customer Value, and Improve Sustainability.

Some of these ideas that are being developed include: FlowGen Micro hydro generator (an energy recovery technology), algae to biofuel, water quality early detection initiative, new offering for off-grid customers, and Unitywater collaboration with TaKaDu system that enables water utilities to manage the full life-cycle of network events like leaks, bursts, and pressure issues.

What are your facility drivers/needs?
Unitywater currently operates in one of the fastest growing regions of Australia, providing essential water supply and sewerage services to 16.3% of Queensland’s population. We operate 17 sewage treatment plants (with 12 producing recycled water) and 111 drinking water reservoirs.

Unitywater’s main driver is Operational Excellence, supported by a strong innovation model. One of our core values is innovation and the organization is constantly looking for ways to do things better and to be more efficient.

The organization has recently developed and established an innovation model with a robust and reliable process to manage new ideas from concept through to implementation, accessible to employees from all areas of the business.

How has LIFT helped, or how would you like LIFT to help your facility?
Unitywater has just begun interaction with LIFT, but we are looking forward to creating sustainable relationships and identifying opportunities and ideas within the technological innovation space. More importantly, to sharing and receiving information through technology sessions, forums, and networking platforms to enhance partnerships and engagements with other water utilities.

If there were one technology you would pilot or collaborate on tomorrow, what would it be?
HTL (Hydrothermal liquefaction).
