What is your technology?
Microvi has developed a process, the MicroNiche™ Engineering (MNE) platform, to irreversibly retain selected microorganisms in polymer composites called biocatalysts. Microvi has developed biocatalysts to address BOD reduction, nitrification, denitrification, nitritation, and phosphorus removal/recovery.
 
What are the benefits to implementing your technology?
 
  • Reductions in HRT, resulting in smaller footprint/increased capacity.
  • Protection of microorganisms within the biocatalyst from competition, predation, and shear forces.
  • Process simplification (e.g., no Return Activated Sludge).
  • Reduction in overall sludge generation within process due to little-to-no biological growth within the Microvi reactor.
  • Ability to shelter organisms from shock loads.
  • Ability to maintain a state of stasis for extended periods of time.
 
Has the technology been tested, demonstrated, or implemented anywhere to date?
A 300 gpm Denitrovi™ nitrate removal system is in operation removing nitrate from groundwater at Sunny Slope Water Company in Pasadena, CA. Wastewater trials have occurred in Mobile, AL, Union City, CA, the United Kingdom, and Australia demonstrating BOD reduction, cold temperature nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal. There have been further pilot trials performed to demonstrate removal of contaminants such as 1,4 dioxane and NDMA.

What are some of the next steps needed to advance the technology?

Microvi has recently entered into an exclusive alliance agreement with WesTech Engineering. The initial focus for the alliance will be implementation of the market ready Denitrovi™ technology for drinking water, as well as identifying potential partners to demonstrate Denitrovi™ on tertiary wastewater applications as well as potential partners for testing our Aerovi™ technology for tertiary ammonia removal in wastewater and ammonia removal from groundwater. Additional testing opportunities will be required to demonstrate and further develop other applications of the technology (e.g., BOD reduction, phosphorus removal).
 
How has LIFT helped, or how can LIFT help?

LIFT has provided opportunities to introduce the Microvi technologies to potential customers and partners, such as the Technology Scan and presentation at the 2017 IR2 Forum. LIFT can further help by providing additional opportunities to identify potential partners for demonstration trials and pilot testing.
