Technology Spotlight

What is your technology? (brief description)
Omnivore® is a digester retrofit that triples the capacity of existing digesters with two components: (1) the addition of a screw press thickener and (2) advances energy efficient mixing system. Omnivore® works by turning a low solids wastewater digester (2 to 3%) solids into a high solids (5 to 8%) digester through thickening and improved mixing. Omnivores® cost less to build and operate, and is much more rugged and flexible in operation than conventional wastewater digesters.

What are the benefits to implementing your technology?
The main benefits of Omnivore are decreasing mixing energy consumption by up to 10x with multiple energy efficient mixers that provide mixer redundancy, can be removed with digester in service, and significantly improve mixing efficiency. With thickening, Omnivore saves significant costs by tripling digester capacity to avoid construction of new digesters, increase redundancy, decrease energy consumption, and create flexible capacity for increased sludge flows and/or co-digestion of external feed stock.

Has the technology been tested, demonstrated, or implemented anywhere to date?

Omnivore® is proven and has been demonstrated at commercial scale in multiple installations. The energy efficient high solids mixing systems have been deployed in over 1600 installation worldwide over 30 years. Recent Omnivores® installations with mixing only, or mixing and thickening, that are operating, under construction, or in final design can be found in numerous plants in Europe (Italy, Germany, England, Cyprus, etc) and Asia (Singapore, Japan) as well a number of plants in North America including:

  • Toronto, Canada
  • Camden, New Jersey
  • Victorville, California
  • South San Francisco, California
  • Antioch, California
  • Los Angeles, California

What are some of the next steps needed to advance the technology?

Technology is established with deep installation base in Europe and growing installation base in North America.

How has LIFT helped, or how can LIFT help?
LIFT has been a great resource for distributing the knowledge base about this technology, it’s benefits, and ensuring the industry is aware of this digester retrofit that can save utilities significant cost by improving mixing efficiency to reduce energy demand by up to 10x and triple digester capacity to avoid construction of new digesters, increase redundancy, decrease energy consumption, and create flexible capacity for increased sludge flows and/or co-digestion of external feed stock.
