BIOHAVEN Floating Islands, a type of Floating Treatment Wetland (FTW), which is a subset of the constructed wetland family.
What are the benefits to implementing your technology?
BioHavens provide all the benefits of a constructed wetland, but on a “concentrated” footprint. They are versatile, modular, and easy to deploy. They mitigate the major parameters of concern in wastewater. The new WaterRR embodiment includes a solar component that is anticipated to improve wintertime performance.
Has the technology been tested, demonstrated,or implemented anywhere to date?
We are approaching 9,000 BioHaven launches internationally since 2005. There are numerous peer-reviewed studies tracking BioHaven efficacy, and even more case studies. Most of these relate to water quality, but BioHavens are also utilized in many other applications, including wave mitigation, fishery enhancement, waterscape beautification, and solar power support platforms.
What are some of the next steps needed to advance the technology?
WaterRR is our wholly owned subsidiary targeting water resource recovery (WRR) for lagoon-based wastewater. Our BioHaven WRR systems, which are developed around a 60-year design life, are able to pay for themselves in an estimated seven to 12 years by growing harvestable plants, trees, and in some settings, forage fish like the fathead minnow, in final-stage wastewater lagoons. Alternatively, our WRR systems can also generate commercial volumes of photovoltaic-derived energy. We are a new form of WRR and need demonstration projects.
How has LIFT helped, or how can LIFT help?
LIFT represents a critical information transfer window that can connect WaterRR with progressive wastewater practitioners and their communities. LIFT and its technology scan process has provided the critical credibility needed to bring WaterRR’s initiative to lagoon-based wastewater systems.
