Technology Spotlight

Clear Cove System’s Enhanced Primary Treatment (EPT) System.

What is your technology?
ClearCove’s Enhanced Primary Treatment (EPT) and Sludge Classifying Press (SCP) technologies are innovative patented processes that remove the majority of organics, all visible fibers, and solids >50-microns at the head of the wastewater treatment plant. The ClearCove EPT is a complete headworks solution which performs screening, grit removal, primary clarification, and equalization of flow and organics in a single step. The SCP removes and compacts trash and hair, controls the particle size entering the anaerobic digester, and thickens the sludge with high organic capture.

Has the technology been tested, demonstrated, or implemented to date?
The technology has been demonstrated and piloted at over 10 locations. The most recent demonstration project was partially funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) at the Ithaca Area Wastewater Treatment Facility. The data collected from the demonstration was analyzed by a third-party engineering firm and showed that the technology would enable a 62% aeration energy consumption reduction and up to 400% increase in biogas production at the facility if implemented at full-scale.

What are the next steps needed to advance your technology?
As the technology has been successfully demonstrated at numerous sites, the necessary next step to advance the technology is to install it in a full-scale application. If there is interest in the ClearCove technology, our mobile pilot unit can be deployed to the requested site for demonstration and validation by the interested party. Upon completion of demonstration and fulfillment of performance claims, design of the ClearCove EPT for full-scale implementation into the facility would begin. Further demonstration, research, and development of the ClearCove EPT and SCP in combination with nutrient removal and membrane technologies could be beneficial to further enhance validation of the technology. This would require the membranes, EPT, SCP, and BNR studies to be paired at the host facilities.

How has LIFT helped, or how can LIFT help?
Being a member of the WERF LIFT Program created the opportunity to introduce our technologies and technical findings with end-users. These types of non-sales conversations that focus on solutions are not common but desired. LIFT has been instrumental in making introductions to forward thinking municipalities that are interested in the technologies ClearCove Systems provides. They continue to offer us opportunities and exposure to further our innovative system to the market.
