Water Sector Organizations Collaborate on Innovation

On December 10th, staff from the Water Environment Federation, the Water Environment Research Foundation, the American Water Works Association, and the Water Research Foundation met in Alexandria, VA to share updates on each organization’s efforts on innovation in the water sector.

To help inform the discussions that followed, Jeff Lape, Deputy Director of the Office of Science and Technology within the U.S. EPA Office of Water, was invited to speak on EPA’s Water Technology Innovation Blueprint Version 2.0 published in April 2014. Sally Gutierrez, Director of the Environmental Technology Innovation Cluster Development and Support Program within the U.S. EPA Office of Research and Development, was invited to present on progress to date on the cluster program nationally.

As a result of the meeting, the organizations identified two immediate action items for which all groups will engage:

  • The organizations will support innovation ecosystems including technology incubators, technology accelerators, and water innovation clusters.
  • The organizations will explore a collaborative effort building upon our own organizational efforts to catalyze innovation and the work the U.S. EPA has already done on the Innovation Blueprint 2.0 that promotes clean and safe water.
