A number of challenging issues exist regarding the understanding the significance of the presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems. This White Paper consists of a critical literature review with an identification of key knowledge gaps based. The recommendations of recent U.S. EPA, NOAA, and critical reviews on research needs were considered.
