"Shortcut nitrogen removal refers to biological nitrogen removal when ammonia is not converted to nitrate, but halts at nitrite to shortcut the conventional nitrification/denitrification process. Shortcut nitrogen removal processes provide significant potential benefits in terms of energy, carbon, and chemical savings compared with conventional biological nitrogen removal.
