REPORT DESCRIPTION:

This research examined the capacity and kinetics of phosphorus (P) removal by chemical solids from wastewater and several factors that affect the reactions. The studies were conducted in a full-scale tertiary chemical P process, as well as bench-scale experiments with real secondary effluents and chemical P sludge, with results showing that the waste sludge can still continue to remove P. Information from this study can help develop new process flowsheets to take advantage of the sorptive capacity of these used solids in a more cost-effective manner, which in turn could lead to ultra-low effluent phosphorus concentrations at significantly reduced alum doses.
