REPORT DESCRIPTION:

This research project examined the applicability of the anammox (anaerobic ammonium oxidation) process in lab-scale and full-scale systems, focusing on different aspects of biological nitrogen removal through anammox and mainstream deammonification. The study demonstrated that with appropriate strategies for selectively retaining AOB and AMX, while (partially) outselecting NOB, it is possible to achieve at least mainstream anammox even at a sustained low temperature of 15oC. Furthermore, it was shown that with appropriate strategies for bioaugmentation from a sidestream deammonification process coupled with selective biomass retention (biofilm or granules), a high mainstream process N-removal efficiency can be achieved.
